Cougars drop pair of one-run games to Shockers
HOUSTON – Houston could not connect on the timely hit, dropping the doubleheader finale, 2-1 to Wichita State on Friday night from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
The Cougars (13-13, 1-2 AAC) could not solve Wichita State starter Jace Kaminska (2-0). The right-hander allowed five hits and seven baserunners in 7.0 scoreless frames. He struck out four and did not allow a leadoff batter to reach (0-for-7).
Houston starter Jaycob Deese (2-2) tossed a career-high 7.2 innings, working around eight hits to allow just two runs. In his second start, the right-hander struck out six and walked one. Andy Belcik permitted one hit in 0.1 frames and Blake Schultz allowed one hit in 1.0 inning.
Offensively, the Cougars were led by Dylan Post and Ryan Hernandez who finished with two hits apiece. Houston cut its deficit to 2-1 in the eighth on a Will Pendergrass sacrifice fly but could not inch closer, stranding the tying run at third.
Wichita State (14-9, 2-1 AAC) scored in the opening frame and added insurance in the eighth, chasing Deese from the contest on a Garret Kocis double. One batter later, Corrigan Bartlett singled through the left side for a 2-0 advantage.
The teams close the four-game set on Saturday at noon. Houston will send right-hander Ben Sears (1-1, 6.30 ERA) to the mound against southpaw Spencer Hynes (2-1, 7.00 ERA). The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
