Junior guard becomes first Cougar to receive All-America honors since 1999
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior guard Quentin Grimes added additional honors to his trophy case when he was named to the Sporting News All-America Third Team on Tuesday.
Grimes became the first Cougar to earn All-America honors of any kind since Gee Gervin received Honorable Mention in 1999. He became the first Cougar to be named to the first three Teams since center Hakeem Olajuwon was a Consensus pick and Michael Young received Second-Team honors in 1984.
The Woodlands, Texas, native has enjoyed an award-winning junior campaign for the Cougars in 2020-21. He recently was named one of 10 Semifinalists for the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy for Player of the Year. The award is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the nation's top collegiate player.
Grimes also has been named one of five finalists for the Jerry West Award, presented to the nation's top shooting guard by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was named to the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Late-Season Top 20 Watch List and the Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List.
Grimes was joined on the Third Team by Herbert Jones (Alabama), Trayce Jackson-Davis (Indiana), Davion Mitchell (Baylor) and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (Villanova).
Luka Garza (Iowa), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois), Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State), Jared Butler (Baylor) and Corey Kispert (Gonzaga) received First-Team recognition, while Drew Timme (Gonzaga), Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga), Evan Mobley (USC), Hunter Dickinson (Michigan) and Kofi Cockburn (Illinois) were named to the Second Team.
