Sixth inning proves to be the difference
SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Houston Softball team cut its two-run deficit in half in the sixth inning, but the comeback effort came short as the Cougars fell to Texas State, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Houston (7-9) entered the sixth trailing by two and managed to score a run to pull within arm's reach, but Texas State (10-3) responded with a pair in the bottom of the inning, proving to be the difference.
Junior Bethany Busch posted a game-high two hits in the contest, scoring a run and stealing three bases in the process. Sophomore Britaney Shaw finished 1-for-3 on Sunday, tallying Houston's first run of the game.
After surrendering one run in the first inning, sophomore Megan Lee bounced back well and didn't allow another hit until the fifth. She finished the game with four strikeouts, having issued just one walk.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Sophomore Kati Ray Brown stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and sent one to the warning track, allowing Shaw to score and tie the game at one.
6th | Busch singled up the middle to keep the inning alive and then put her speed on display. After stealing second, Busch immediately swiped third, scoring on the throwing error from Texas State to cut the Houston deficit to one. The Bobcats quickly found a rebuttal of their own, plating two runs in the inning to seal the 5-2 victory.
