Comeback Effort Falls Short Against McNeese

Queen’s home run not enough to spark comeback
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team cut a three-run deficit to one in the sixth inning, but the comeback effort came short as the Cougars fell to McNeese by a score of 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Houston moves to 7-10 on the season, while McNeese improves to 8-12 on the year. This is the first time the Cougars have fallen to the Cowgirls since April 25, 2017.
The Cougars saw a trio of players record multiple hits on the night as seniors Rock Benavides and Lindsey Stewart-Vaughn, along with junior Kati Ray Brown, each collected two hits. Senior Sarah Queen launched her fifth home run of the season in the season to bring Houston to within a score.
In the circle, sophomore Megan Lee got the nod, as she tossed her first complete game of the year, surrendering three earned runs and walking two batters in the process.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Four hits in the inning from the Cowgirls resulted in them crossing the plate twice to push their lead to 3-0.
5th | After McNeese stretched the lead to four, Houston responded right away with a run in the bottom of the inning, courtesy of a ball put in play by Brown that scored Stewart from third.
6th | Queen stepped up to the plate with senior Tierrah Williams in scoring position and belted her fifth homer of the season with a shot to center that cut the deficit to just one

Houston hits the road for a weekend tournament at the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Classic March 12-13. The Cougars will start their weekend facing UMKC at 1 p.m., Friday.
