Trailing by one entering the home half of the 10th, Ian McMillan brought in Andrew Papantonis on an infield single to tie things at four. One batter later, Lovelace set down the game winner as the speedy Brad Burckel evaded the tag at home.
A two-run home run gave UTA (10-13) the lead in the first. Houston outfielder Steven Rivas answered in the second courtesy of a leadoff homer. The long ball was his ninth of the season and trimmed the Cougar deficit to 2-1.
The Cougars tied things on a Samuel Tormos' fielder's choice to score Will Pendergrass in the second. Brad Burckel scored one batter later as Tormos was put out on the bases. Houston finished with just six hits but managed three in the frame.
The Cougars held the lead up until the eighth inning, when UTA's Dylan Paul tied the game up on a Boone Montgomery single. UTA went up 4-3 in the 10th inning on a JD Wadleigh run.
Burckel led the way for Houston, finishing 2-for-4 alongside a stolen base – the 30th in his career. Dylan Paul (2-for-4) led the Mavericks with two runs and two RBIs.Fun-da-mentals. 🥳

Houston starter Ben Sears did not allow another run after a pair scored in the first. The right-hander permitted seven hits and one walk without a strikeout. Derrick Cherry allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits in 4.0 innings. Ryne Huggins earned the win in 0.1 relief frames.
Houston opens American Athletic Conference play with a four-game series against Wichita State. The set begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. All four contests against the Shockers can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
