Senior Luke Long fires team-best 68 in Final Round on Sunday to lead Cougars
TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Houston senior Luke Long posted a 4-under 68 in the Final Round of the N.I.T. to lead the Cougars with a score of 216 at Omni Tucson National Resort on Sunday afternoon.
Starting his day off No. 1, Long made birdies on each of his first three holes. He overcame a bogey on No. 6 with an eagle to open his back nine on the 511-yard, par-5 10th hole and drained his final birdie of the day on No. 16 to surge into a tie for 35th.
As a team, the Cougars finished 12th with a 54-hole score of 867 on the 7,167-yard, par-72 course.
No. 8 Oklahoma State captured the team title with a score of 817 to finish four strokes ahead of No. 2 Oklahoma. No. 6 Texas finished third at 833 with No. 41 San Diego State (835), No. 17 and host Arizona (836), No. 4 Illinois (836), No. 37 New Mexico (850), Utah (857) USC (861) and Iowa State (862) rounding out the Top-10 leaders.
Individually, Oklahoma's Garett Reband earned medalist honors with a score of 15-under 201 and finished two shots ahead of Oklahoma State's Eugenio Chacarra and Texas' Pierceson Coody.
Sophomore Austyn Reily joined Long in the group in 35th at 215 after posting an even-par 72 on Sunday. Senior Alexander Frances tied for 68th at 221, while senior Matt Cole tied for 74th at 221. Senior Logan Young tied for 79th at 222.
UP NEXT
Following the N.I.T., the Cougars will open the month of April when they play host to the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston on April 5-6.
From there, the team closes the regular season at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas on April 9-11.
