Cougars to play four games against top opponents
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team returns to Cougar Softball Stadium for a midweek contest with No. 7/7 Texas on Wednesday, before traveling to San Marcos, Texas, for a three-game series with Texas State March 6-7.
Houston is coming off a doubleheader sweep against Abilene Christian, which saw the Cougars plate a combined 23 runs and launch seven home runs. The five homers Houston his in game two of the doubleheader were the most in a single game since Feb. 19, 2017.
Houston's high-octane offense that holds a team batting average of .334, is guided by the top three hitters in its lineup, as designated player Bethany Busch (.400), outfielder Lindsey Stewart-Vaughn (.444) and infielder Sarah Queen (.410) all hold batting averages above .400.
Houston has proven its worth as one of the best in the entire state of Texas, having posted a 24-7 record against opponents from the Lone Star State, dating back to 2019. After sweeping the season series against Abilene Christian last week, the Cougars have now won four consecutive games against Texas schools, including five of their past six. Houston is 7-2 this season when matched up with Texas schools.

Hit 'em Fast, Hit 'em Hard
Houston's offense has wasted no time coming out of the gates firing on all cylinders this season, having outscored its opponents 55-28 in the first three innings, while holding a scoring .377 batting average in those frames.
The first inning has been particularly friendly for the Cougars, as Houston has outscored the opposition 20-5 in the first frame. In fact, nearly one-third of the team's 17 home runs this season have come in the first inning, which has seen Houston posted a team slugging percentage of .776.
Queen of the Diamond
Throughout her career, redshirt senior infielder Sarah Queen has proven her worth as a rock in the Houston lineup, having started the past 157 games for UH. Not only has Queen started in games, but she's also impacted them as well.
With a total of six appearances on the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll in her career, Queen's accolades have been recognized by just The American. After finishing 2018 batting .359 with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs, Queen also landed a spot on the NFCA All-Region Third Team, where she became All-Conference First Team honoree as well.
ATTENDENCE POLICY
Due to COVID-19 protocols outlined by Houston Athletics, attendance for the 2021 season will be pass-list only and limited to the student-athletes and coaches of the home and visiting teams. These protocols are subject to change and Houston Athletics will continue to monitor the need for adjustments to the attendance policy.
Diamond Club will be able to attend select contests during the 2021 season. More information will be available to Diamond Club members through Cougar Pride.
