NORMAN, Okla. – Houston Baseball could not produce a hit with runners aboard, spoiling a strong start from Robert Gasser as the Cougars dropped the series opener, 7-2 to Oklahoma on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Oklahoma (10-7) chased Gasser in the sixth. Facing reliever Jaycob Deese, nine-hole hitter Brandon Zaragoza sent a two-run single through the left side and Jimmy Crooks delivered an RBI-single to stretch Oklahoma's advantage to four with the three-run frame.
Gasser (2-2) struck out a career-high 11 batters, marking the second consecutive week the southpaw had fanned 10-plus hitters. He tossed 5.1 innings, permitting six hits and five runs (four earned) while walking a pair.
Oklahoma starter Wyatt Olds (1-2) was equally as impressive, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out 10 and walking another. Sooner pitching fanned 15 Houston batters and limited the Cougars to 0-for-12 (.000) with runners on base.
Trailing 2-1, Houston (10-7) stranded the tying run at third base in the sixth inning. Brandon Uhse (2-for-4) laced a one-out triple into right center before Oklahoma starter Wyatt Olds fanned consecutive Cougar hitters.
Deese allowed two runs on seven hits while walking a pair in 2.1 innings. Maddux Miller picked up the final out of the eighth inning after Deese exited following a two-out, two-run single by Conor McKenna, stretching the Sooner lead to 7-2.
The teams resume the three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday. Houston sends left-hander Cameron Prayer (0-1, 6.75 ERA) to the mound against Oklahoma southpaw Jake Bennett (2-1, 5.68 ERA). The contest can be seen on FOX Sports Oklahoma+ and heard on Stretch Live.

Tyler Bielamowicz (1-for-3) started the scoring, lofting a solo home run over the left field wall in the second. The homer was his fifth of the season and extended his on-base streak to nine games. The senior has recorded at least one hit in 14 of his last 16 games.⛽️⛽️⛽️
