Cougars defeat a ranked opponent for sixth year in a row
OKLAHOMA CITY – Behind a four-RBI performance from redshirt senior Sarah Queen, the University of Houston Softball team upset No. 7/7 Oklahoma State by a score of 4-2 on Saturday.
The win extends Houston's (8-12) streak of taking down a ranked opponent in every season of the Kristin Vesely era. Saturday's win over Oklahoma State (20-2) marks the sixth in program history over a top-10 team and first since defeating No. 5 Texas A&M on March 1, 2017.
Queen paced the Houston offense, driving in all four runs, which included a three-run home run in the third to put the Cougars ahead 3-2. She was joined by seniors Lindsey Stewart-Vaughn and Aspen Howie as those with multiple hits on the day.
In the circle, junior Rachel Hertenberger tossed all seven inning, surrenduring just four hits in the process. This is Herternberger's second win of her career over a top-25 team.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Behind a couple of base-hits, the Cowgirls jumped out to the first lead, scoring a pair of runs.
3rd | After Stewart-Vaughn collected her second hit of the day, junior Bethany Busch walked to put two on for Queen, who sent her seventh homer of the season over the wall in left-center to give Houston a 3-2 lead.
5th | Queen added a much-needed insurance run to the board, as her single to left field scored Stewart-Vaughn.
