Tigers rally to top Cougars in final match
HOUSTON – The Houston tennis team dropped a 4-3 nail biter on Friday afternoon to the Memphis Tigers that came down to the final match at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars (7-3, 1-1 AAC) took the early 2-0 lead over Memphis (4-10, 1-2 AAC), but that would be the final time the home team led on the day.
The doubles point was won by Houston after victories by the pairs of Blanca Cortijo Parreno/Azul Pedemonti and Mimi Kendall-Woseley/Laura Slisane. The Pedemonti and Cortijo Parreno duo has not lost their doubles matches against North Texas on Febraury 25.
In singles action, Parreno dominated on court six with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over her foe to put the Cougars up by two. After straight set losses by Slisane and Phonexay Chitdara tied up the team score at two apiece, the attention turned to the final three Cougars which would decide the team result.
On court one, Kendall-Woseley found herself down after a 6-2 first frame, but the senior stayed calm and fought back. She battled for a 7-5 second set victory to force a decisive third set, but wasn't ultimately able to pull off the rally.
Coming off a conference award last week, Azul Pedemonti found herself in a battle on court five against Alisha Reayer. Pedemonti and Reaver exchanged blows all the way to the decisive third set which Pedemonti clinched with a crosscourt winner.
With Pedemonti's victory, the match became a 3-3 affair that would be decided by the result on court four. With both teams and coaches surrounding court four, the stage was set.
Gabriela Giraldo came out of the gates strong with a 6-2 set, but Memphis' Camila Soares would go on a run the rest of the way. Giraldo found herself on the wrong end of the final two sets, handing herself and the team the loss.
