Houston Returns to Action Against Memphis

HOUSTON – Riding a three-match winning streak, the Houston tennis team is prepared for competition as they host Memphis at 1 p.m. CT on Friday, March 12.

With the cancellation of its March 3 contest against Lamar, the Cougars have not had a match in nearly two weeks since the 4-1 victory over Wichita State on February 28.

Due to COVID-19 protocols outlined by Houston Athletics, attendance for the 2021 season will be pass-list only and limited to the student-athletes and coaches of the home and visiting teams. Per University of Houston guidelines, all those attending are required to wear face coverings.

ON THE PROWL

As a team, the Cougars are rolling to start the season with wins in six of their last seven matches as well as the aforementioned three-match streak. The team's only two losses this season came to Texas Tech and Texas A&M, bother Power Five foes.

The team has also been on a roll individually and received deserving recognition. During the week of March 2, Azul Pedemonti earned American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after an undefeated weekend. The sophomore from Argentina went 3-0 in singles competition, including two straight-set victories, and also went 2-1 in doubles play.

SERIES HISTORY

Throughout history, the two programs have met four times since 2007 with Houston leaving victorious in three of those meetings. Though, the Tigers stole a 4-2 victory in Houston in the team's last meeting on March 18, 2017.

Head coach Helena Besovic has never coached against the American Athletic foe since becoming the Houston leader in 2018.

UP NEXT

Conference action continues next week for the program as they welcome Cincinnati for a 10 a.m. CT match before traveling to New Orleans for meetings with Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana later in the week.
