Cougars projected to return to postseason in 2021
HOUSTON – The University of Houston is one of three American Athletic Conference programs projected to reach the NCAA Tournament in 2021 according to D1Baseball, which released its league preview Friday.
The Cougars, who open their season one week from Friday against Texas Southern, were picked to join conference-favorite ECU and Tulane in the postseason. Houston leads all AAC schools with nine top prospects for the 2021 MLB Draft, per D1Baseball. The Cougars are tied for second in the conference with three top prospects for the 2022 draft.
"The Cougars will have one of their deepest pitching staffs ever from a quality standpoint," Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball wrote. "You can easily say that pitching coach Terry Rooney can dip into the treasure chest for seven or eight arms, minimum, and get good results on the mound. Furthermore, I really like the blend of UH's offense with the speedy duo of (Brandon) Uhse and (Brad) Burckel, along with big-time power bat of Hernandez."
Houston's top 2021 prospects include: right-hander Jaycob Deese (13), left-hander Cameron Prayer (14), outfielder Steven Rivas (16), right-hander Ben Sears (18), outfielder Brandon Uhse (20), infielder Ryan Hernandez (21), right-hander Derrick Cherry (29), right-hander Sean Bretz (38) and southpaw Robert Gasser (46).
Infielder Brad Burckel (9) headlines Houston's 2022 prospects alongside catcher Dylan Post (13) and infielder Luke Almendarez (14). Infielder Will Pendergrass and right-hander Patrick Dunn were also tabbed the league's No. 18 and No. 19 impact freshmen.
