Sophomore captured first career title at UCF Challenge on Tuesday
ORLANDO – After leading the Cougars at the season-opening spring tournament, University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard was honored as the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Battling tough weather conditions, Fredgaard fought her way to an even-par 72 in the Final Round of the UCF Challenge in Orlando and captured the individual title earlier this week.
With temperatures in the mid-40s and wind gusts up to 30 mph, Fredgaard finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament at 7-under 209 on the 6,349-yard, par-72 layout at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
Fredgaard overcame a pair of bogeys on her first 10 holes with birdies on No. 11 and No. 13. Despite a bogey on No. 17, the Asserbo, Denmark, native rebounded with a birdie on her 54th and final hole to claim a 2-stroke win over Wake Forest's Lauren Walsh.
One day earlier, Fredgaard shot a career-low 67 in the Second Round. It bested her previous low of 68, done four times and most recently in the Final Round of the White Sands Invitational on Oct. 30, 2019.
It was the first title of her collegiate career and topped her previous career-best finish of second at the White Sands Invitational in Nassau, Bahamas, on Oct. 28-30, 2019.
Fredgaard also became the fifth Cougar under Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell to win an individual title, joining Raegan Bremer, Emily Gilbreth, Leonie Harm and Megan Thothong.
