Cougars kick off 2021 with back-to-back home games
HOUSTON – After taking down Rice in its exhibition contest, the University of Houston Soccer team opens its 2021 regular season hosting Houston Baptist inside Carl Lewis Stadium at 7 p.m., Thursday.
Due to COVID-19 protocols outlined by Houston Athletics, attendance for the matchup against the Huskies will be pass list only, which is limited to the student-athletes of the home and visiting teams.
In his fourth season at the helm of the Cougars, Head Coach Diego Bocanegra is coming off a 2019 campaign that saw the program's first conference tournament appearance in history.
Returning from that squad is senior forward Jazmin Grant, who was named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team, after leading the Cougars with 20 shots on goals and finishing second in program history for shots (35) in a single season last year. The 2019 Second-Team All-Conference honoree also delivered 11 points and three assists during her junior campaign.
In the Cougars' win over the Owls, senior midfielder Mia Brascia scored the lone goal of the game off an assist from freshman midfielder Caitlyn Matthews. Matthews quickly made an impact on the field, leading Houston with a game-high three shots, two of which were on goal.
