Houston uses singles success to defeat Wichita State

HOUSTON - The Houston tennis team defeated Wichita State 4-1 on Sunday for its third consecutive victory.

In addition to their third straight victory, the Cougars (7-2, 1-0 AAC) have now won six of their last seven matches dating back to Jan. 29.

UH's tandem of Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno claimed a 6-3 win on court three in doubles over Wichita State's (3-9, 0-1 AAC) Natsumi Kurahashi and Alexandra Lazarova. The Shockers earned victories on courts one and two to take the doubles points.

In singles, the Cougars tied the match at 1-1 as Cortijo Parreno earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Wichita State's Alexandra Lazarova. On court four, Gabriela Giraldo made quick work of Wichita State's Jessie Zheng, 6-3, 6-0, to put Houston in the lead for good. Azul Pedemonti took won in straight sets at the No. 5 line, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) to put UH in front, 3-1.

The clinching point came from Laura Slisane's rally on court three. After dropping the opening frame, the Latvia native dominated the ensuing sets to earn a 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory.

After defeating the Shockers, the Cougars now lead the all-time series, 2-1. Both victories have come under head coach Helena Besovic.

UP NEXT

Houston welcomes Lamar to town on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. CT match. The Coguar will return to conference play on March 12 against Memphis.

The Cardinals are assistant coach Rob Lee's alma mater where he was a captain for his final two seasons. Lee then stuck around for three more seasons, two as a graduate assistant and one as volunteer coach for the men's team.
