Comeback Cougars

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Houston scored four runs in the final three innings including the go-ahead RBI double from Brandon Uhse in the 10th inning to take the series against A&M-Corpus with a 4-3 win at Whataburger Field on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing by two entering the ninth, Houston senior Tyler Bielamowicz (4-for-5) launched a leadoff home run. The Cougars would load the bases, helped by a pair of Islander throwing errors before Dylan Post hit into a double play, scoring Andrew Papantonis to tie the game at three.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-1 on the season including taking 3-of-4 against the Islanders beginning with Tuesday's midweek victory at Schroeder Park. The Islanders fall to 4-3.
With the new extra-inning rule in effort, second baseman Brad Burckel (2-for-5) began the 10th inning on second. Uhse (2-for-5) led off the inning, lacing a double into the left field corner. In the home half, Houston closer Derrick Cherry (1-0) left the bases loaded with a game-inning fielder's choice.
Cherry struck out three and did not allow a hit in 2.0 innings. Cougar starter Blake Schultz tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, working around one hit and a walk while striking out another. The right-hander lowered his season ERA to 1.08.
Burckel struck a solo home run, his third of the week, in the eighth inning, cutting the Cougar deficit to one. A&M-Corpus Christi designated hitter Josh Caraway immediately grabbed the run back in the home half with a solo homer of his own.
A&M-Corpus Christi starter Hayden Thomas tossed 8.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while working around nine hits alongside 12 strikeouts. The right-hander kept Houston off the scoreboard for the first seven innings.
The Cougars continued to look sharp defensively, highlighted by senior catcher Kyle Lovelace who threw out three would-be base stealers.
Houston caps its four-game road trip Wednesday at Lamar. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Beaumont's Vincent-Beck Stadium. The contest will be the opener for the Cardinals who had their first seven games canceled due to positive COVID-19 test results and contact tracing.
