LAREDO, Texas – University of Houston senior Alexander Frances posted a 2-under 70 in the Final Round of the Border Olympics to surge into a tie for fifth and help lead the Cougars to a third-place team finish on Tuesday afternoon.
Competing on the 7,375-yard par-72 course at Laredo Country Club, the Cougars posted their low round of the tournament Tuesday and lowered their team score for the second straight round to finish at 873.
No. 26 Texas A&M captured the team title at 862, while No. 9 Texas finished at 870. Sam Houston State (885), ULM (887), UTSA (888), No. 13 Baylor (889), Illinois State (893), No. 43 Kent State (897) and New Mexico State (900) rounded out the Top 10 leaders.
Starting on No. 1, Frances began the day with seven straight birdies before sinking back-to-back birdies to close out his front nine. Following his lone bogey of the day on No. 10, Frances quickly rallied and regained the stroke with a birdie on the par-4 11th hole.
He closed out the tournament with seven straight pars and tied at 1-under 215 with Mason Nome (Texas), William Holcomb (Sam Houston State) and No. 82 Sam Bennett (Texas A&M).
Sophomore Austyn Reily earned his second straight Top-20 showing of the season with a score of 220 to tie for 15th. Junior Braxton Watkins lowered his score for the second straight round with an even-par 72 and tied for 21st at 222, joining senior Matt Cole.
Senior Andrew Gibson finished his tournament with a 71 Tuesday and joined teammate sophomore Trip Morris in a tie for 29th at 225. Senior Luke Long tied for 49th at 228, while senior Logan Young tied for 69th at 232.
Texas A&M's Dan Erickson and Texas' Hunter Ostrom tied after 54 holes at 4-under 212 with Erickson winning medalist honors on the second hole of a playoff.

Following the Border Olympics, the Cougars will compete at the Cabo Collegiate on March 1-3 at TPC San Antonio, in San Antonio, Texas.
From there, Houston will play host to one of the nation's premier collegiate tournaments in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. This elite event will be held March 15-16 at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
