LAREDO, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in third place late in the Second Round of the Border Olympics before play was suspended due to darkness Monday evening.
The Cougars opened the tournament with a team score of 294 in the morning round and stood at +7 late in the Second Round.
Most teams will have one or two holes remaining to complete their Second Round before beginning Final Round play Tuesday morning on the 7,375-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club.
No. 26 Texas A&M held the team lead at +4 to stand two strokes in front of No. 9 Texas and three shots ahead of the Cougars. Sam Houston (+8), Illinois State (+12), UTSA (+15), No. 43 Kent State (+18), No. 13 Baylor (+19), Louisiana (+19) and ULM (+20).
Senior Matt Cole was tied for seventh at even-par to lead the Cougars. The Fayetteville, Ark., native opened the tournament with a 74 but was -2 through 17 holes in the afternoon session.
After playing to +2 through eight holes in the afternoon, Cole rallied with four birdies over his next nine holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 15-16.
Sophomore Austyn Reily and senior Alexander Frances were tied for 11th at +1. After shooting a 74 in the morning, Reily drained a pair of birdies with only one bogey in the Second Round before play was halted with one hole left.
Frances.fired a 2-under 70 in the morning round thanks to four birdies. Junior Braxton Watkins and senior Luke Long were tied for 24th at +5, while senior Logan Young and sophomore Trip Morris were tied for 58th at +9. Senior Andrew Gibson was tied for 64th at +10.
Texas A&M's Sam Bennett and Texas' Hunter Ostrom were tied atop the individual leaderboard, while Dan Erickson (Texas A&M) and Charlie Flynn (Louisiana) were tied for third at -2.
The Border Olympics was scheduled to be the second tournament Houston hosted during the spring season but the recent severe winter weather forced the cancellation of the All-American Intercollegiate on Feb. 14-16 at Golf Club of Houston.

FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS
Teams will wrap up their Second Rounds at 8 a.m., Tuesday, before beginning Final Round play.
The Cougars will compete as a team together off No. 1 to start the Final Round. Long, Morris and Young will be in the first group off No. 18 to start the final 18 holes.
UP NEXT
Following the Border Olympics, the Cougars will compete at the Cabo Collegiate on March 1-3 at TPC San Antonio, in San Antonio, Texas.
From there, Houston will play host to one of the nation's premier collegiate tournaments in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. This elite event will be held March 15-16 at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
