Houston meets A&M-Corpus Christi in midweek action
HOUSTON – Houston Baseball caps its season-opening homestand with a midweek visit from A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at 3 p.m. from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.Â

The contest marks the first of four consecutive between the two programs. Houston (3-0) will begin a three-game set against the Islanders (3-0) on Friday in Corpus Christi.

The Cougars are coming off a strong Opening Weekend performance, sweeping Texas Southern while outscoring the Tigers, 30-9. Houston posted several high marks for Opening Weekend including its most doubles (10) since 2004, batting average (.354) since 2011 and runs (30) since 2012.

A&M-Corpus Christi also swept play to begin the season, defeating Central Michigan twice on Sunday and again Monday afternoon. The Islanders, who are led by 14th-year head coach Scott Malone, rank second in the Southland Conference in earned run average (2.00) and opposing average (.154).

Houston outfielder Steven Rivas and pitcher Robert Gasser were named AAC Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Rivas leads the AAC in five offensive categories including slugging (1.700), runs (7) and total bases (17). Gasser held Texas Southern hitters to 1-of-16 (.063) while fanning a career high seven.

Houston's performance on Opening Weekend put the Cougars inside the top 10 nationally in eight statistical categories including third in doubles (10), fourth in doubles per game (3.33), ninth in batting average (.354), ninth in slugging (.606) and ninth in on-base percentage (.472). On the mound, the Cougars are fifth in walks per nine innings (1.33), sixth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (9.00) and ninth in WHIP (0.78).

Houston is 6-2 all-time against A&M-Corpus Christi with the first meeting coming in 2012. The Cougars have won three consecutive in the series. Houston won the last meeting, 4-2 on Feb. 26, 2017 at Corpus Christi's Whataburger Field.
Houston has recorded a 166-64 (.721) record at home since the start of the 2013 season. The Cougars won 20-plus home games in six consecutive seasons (2013-18) and notched 19 in 2019. Since the opening of Cougar Field (now Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park), Houston is 485-267 (.645) at the facility.
