Edward Sumler IV matches 18th-fastest time in NCAA this season in 200m
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track and Field program concluded its H-Town SpeedCity Series inside Yeoman Fieldhouse on Saturday, winning a total of seven events.
The Houston men finished atop the team standings with 178 points, as the women secured a third-place finish with 105.5 points.
Spencer Bigner got things going for the Cougars with a first-place finish and meet record in the Men's High Jump. Bigner earned a mark of 2.00m (6-06.75) setting a new personal best.
Mustafa Fall led the way for the Cougars in the Men's Shot Put with a personal best in the event. His best mark came on his first attempt, with a toss of 16.62m (54-06.50) for first-place.
In the Women's Weight Throw, Priscilla Adejokun earned a first-place finish with a throw of 20.00m (65-07.50). Adejokun had a stellar day, with her second podium finish of the day coming in the Shot Put where she placed second in the event with a throw of 14.62m (47-11.75).
Seven of the eight qualifiers for the final of the 60-meters were secured by the Cougars. Shaun Maswanganyi led the way with a time of 6.64 tying his own H-Town SpeedCity Series meet record. Christian Hamberlin took second-place (6.73) and JaQuone Hoyte in third place, setting a new personal-best with a time of 6.75.
In the Men's 800-meter, Christian Gilmore finished atop the standings with a meet record time of 1:55.64.
DJ Akindele paced UH in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 7.99, on the women's side Naomi Taylor secured a second-place finish at 8.32.
The final of the men's 200-meter was filled with Cougars Red as UH secured four of the top five finishes in the event. Edward Sumler IV secured first-place with a blazing fast time of 21.00 which matches the 18th-fastest time among collegians this season and leads The American.
On the women's side Cecilia Tamayo-Garza and Camille Rutherford secured two podium finishes in the 200-meter led by Tamayo-Garza with a time of 23.82 in second-place. Rutherford wasn't far behind, crossing the finish line at 24.56.
Sarah Howe snagged a third-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.70 (12-01.50). On the men's side, Christyan Sampy finished in third, clearing 5.23m (17-01.75).
Houston earned a come-from-behind victory in the final event of the day as Maswanganyi, Gilmore, Akindele and Hamberlin won the 4x400-meter relay. Hamberlin closed out the race for the Cougars, coming from behind to help the squad take first-place at 3:15.41.

Due to limited seating and capacity related to COVID-19 precautions, Houston will not allow fans for the 2021 Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field season.
