UH returns to action Sunday versus Cincinnati
HOUSTON -- In its first game in 10 days after a series of postponements, the Houston soccer team earned a scoreless draw with UTSA on Wednesday in San Antonio.
The two teams fought closely for the entirety of their match with neither team dominating possession. Houston (2-1-1) finished the game with eight shots, one more than UTSA (1-2-1).
Perhaps the best chance of regulation for the Cougars came in the 61st minute when they pieced together an incredible opportunity at the net after a throw-in from midfield. After three passes the ball was crossed into the box where midfielder Adriana Hutson's shot missed narrowly to the left of the goal.
Just over 10 minutes later the Cougars came back to the UTSA doorstep. Off a free kick from barely over the midfield line, Houston got the ball to defender Genaye Sanders for the shot on goal.
With the game winding down in the final minutes of the second overtime, the Cougars earned the only shot for either team in that last stanza. The shot by midfielder Mia Brascia skipped over the crossbar. Brascia and Reid Morrison led the team with two shots apiece.
In net, goalkeeper Salma Ghazal made her presence known against the Roadrunners with four saves, earning her first shutout of the season and first as a Cougar. The Sugar Land, Texas, native is now up to six saves on the season.
This was the Cougars second consecutive overtime game of the season after falling to East Carolina on Feb. 14.
The draw marks the first such ending in the 18-year history of these two programs meeting. Three of the teams' previous matches required overtime, but all three times one team finished the job with a golden goal.
The Cougars now return to American Athletic Conference play with a match against Cincinnati waiting in the wings at noon on Sunday.
