SCOUTING THE ISLANDERS. TAMU-CC is currently 5-5 during the 2021-22 season with a 5-0 record at home. The Islanders rank 12th in the nation in steals per game with 13.2. They grabbed a season-high 20 against St. Edward's, 17 against Schreiner and 15 at Rice. In addition to steals, A&M-Corpus Christi ranks first in the Southland Conference scoring (69.5 ppg), assists (15.9 apg), rebounding margin (+5.6) and turnover margin (+4.0).Junior Alecia Westbrook averages a double-double of 13.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. She leads the league in rebounding and ranks third in steals (2.5 spg), fourth in field goal percentage (.519) and fifth in minutes played (30.8 mpg). She has four double-doubles on the year including 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in her last outing against Schreiner on Friday.
3-POINT PARTY. Against Florida State the Cougars connected on 13 3-pointers. Led by Laila Blair who tied her career-high six, Houston tied the second most 3-pointers in school history. Bria Patterson and Britney Onyeje added three treys apiece while Dymond Gladney contributed one. This is the second game this season that Houston has scored double-digit 3-pointers after doing it against Baylor.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE. The Cougars are currently 4-0 when playing at home. The streak started with the exhibition against Texas A&M Commerce and then tallied home wins against Howard, New Mexico, Jacksonville State and Louisiana.
TAKE THE BALL. Houston continues to dominate in takeaways ranking No. 31 in steals with 121 and No. 34 in steals per game at 11.1. In the American conference the Cougars rank second in steals while only ECU ahead with 169. The Cougars are also ranked third in the American in blocked shots with 46 which is good for No. 56 nationally as Tatyana Hill leads the team with 15 ranking No. 87 nationally.
AGAINST FLORIDA STATE. Blair led all scorers with 20 points, including tying her career-high six 3-pointers while also adding six rebounds and six assists. Blair foreshadowed a 3-point showdown for the Cougars (6-5), scoring five straight treys in the first quarter. The Cougars' 13 3-pointers marked the second-highest in program history.
