Houston coaching staff, athletes haul in honors
HOUSTON – Houston Soccer's coaching staff was named the American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year, announced the conference on Wednesday.
Head Coach Diego Bocanegra and his staff have seen the best season in program history earning the most wins ever in the regular season with 13. In addition to the new record victories, the Cougars have also seen national recognition receiving votes the past two weeks. Houston defeated three nationally-ranked opponents this season which was another program first.
Since coming to Houston in 2016, Bocanegra has transformed Houston Soccer leading it to where it is today, seeing its most success yet.
For the second time in the Bocanegra era, the Cougars received a berth to the conference tournament. However, this is the first time seeing a quarterfinal bye and semifinal berth, as well as a No. 2 seed to kick off the postseason.
Assistant coaches Gus Mota, Chelsey Patterson, volunteer coach Morgan Ferrara, and strength and condition coach Autumn Lockwood have worked with Bocanegra to create a tough-to-beat program which has seen both growth and progress.
In addition to Coaching Staff of the Year, The American also released its first, second, and rookie all-conference teams as well.
Redshirt Senior Jazmin Grant was honored on The American All-Conference First Team. The forward has tallied 18 total goals and nine assists throughout her time as a Cougar with three goals and two assists this season so far. Grant has received numerous honors throughout her college career including pre-season honors, weekly conference and honor roll recognition, as well as all-conference awards.
In addition to Grant's first team honors, redshirt senior Mia Brascia and senior Emma Clarke were named to the All-Conference Second Team. Both student-athletes were key components for the Cougars' success this season. Seeing multiple clean sheets, Clarke has been a force on the backline while Brascia has been dynamic in the midfield position.
Freshman Samantha Wiehe was the fourth Cougar to see her name in conference honors receiving a place on the All-Conference Rookie Team. Wiehe's two goals this season both were the game winners for Houston against Jackson State and Tulsa. Her impressive efforts have earned her Rookie of the Week honors as well as honor roll recognition in her first collegiate season.
Houston will face Memphis in Tampa on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the first semifinal match of The American conference tournament. Fans can tune in to ESPN+ to watch the match by clicking here.
