Houston Secures Five Top-10 Finishes in Season Opener

Devin-Vallejo Bannister leads UH with second-place finish in 5K
HOUSTON - The University of Houston Cross Country team opened its season at the HBU Season Opener on Sunday. The men's team secured a second-place team finish and the women's team finished third in the team standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On the women's side Madeline Castleberry posted the highest finish of the day for the Cougars, finishing third in the women's 5K at 19:39.50. Freshman, Macie Ellis joined her in the top-10 with an eighth-place finish at 20:41.10, followed by Sondos Moursey in 11th-place (21:22.50). Hannah Gault earned a 15th-place finish (22:00.40), as Hannah Barker rounded out the field for UH in 27th-place (25.42.80).
The Houston men posted a trio of top-10 finishes, led by Devin Vallejo-Bannister in second-place at 16:08.90 in the men's 5K. Gabriel Armijo took sixth-place with a time of 16:30.40, followed by Devin Fahey in ninth-place (16:46.00). Juan Almos clocked a time of 17:01.60 for 12th-place and was trailed by Tyler Keranen in 21st-place (18:23.80) and Issace Pearce in 22nd-place (18:43.10).
UP NEXT
The Houston Cross Country team will return to action Feb. 6 when the team travels to the 4 Mile Creek Resort in Augusta, Kan. to compete at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Championship.
HOUSTON ATTENDANCE POLICY
Due to limited seating and capacity related to COVID-19 precautions, Houston will not allow fans for the 2021 Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field season.
Fans are encouraged to watch all the Houston Track & Field home meets live on the team's Facebook Page free of charge.
