Cougar men win seven events
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track and Field program opened its H-Town SpeedCity Series inside Yeoman Fieldhouse on Saturday, winning a total of nine events.
This was the first of four H-Town SpeedCity Series events that Houston will host this season.
Throughout the day, the Cougars' men's squad put their skill on display, winning more events than any other school with seven. Houston took the top four spots in the 60-meter dash, with senior Nicholas Alexander leading the charge with his time of 6.71. He was followed by junior Christian Hamberlin (6.71), freshman Dylan Brown (6.77) and sophomore Edward Sumler IV (6.78) as those who claimed the top four positions for the Cougars.
In the 200-meter dash, junior Jordan Booker placed first with his time of 21.43. It was the first of two wins for Booker, as her later served as the anchor in the 4x400-meter relay team. He was joined by Brown and freshman Raylen Sharpe, as well as junior Latef Birks Jr. in that relay team, which won with a time of 3:18.89.
The pole vault saw sophomore Christyan Sampy leap his way to the top spot, after flying to his 5.22m mark. In the long jump, senior Allen Blair helped the Cougars claim another win, with his 7.10m score narrowly edging out teammate and junior Benjamin Okafor, who's mark of 7.06m was good enough for second.
Houston's winning trends in the field events continued throughout the rest of the day, as wins from sophomore Jadon Brome in the triple jump (15.61m) and sophomore Triston Gibbons in the shot put (17.99m) rounded out the successful day for the men.
On the women's side, freshman Zarie Dumas wasted no time making a name for herself, as her 24.58 mark in the 200-meter dash sealed the first win of her collegiate career. She was joined by sophomore Claire Meyer as those who won events for the women. Meyer finished the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:34.19, nearly four seconds faster than second place.
