
Comeback Effort Falls Short at American Championships

Dymond Gladney knocks down career-high seven 3-pointers
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team saw its comeback effort fall short in a 72-64 loss to Wichita State in the First Round of The American Athletic Conference Tournament.

Double-figure efforts from four Cougars, including 21 points from Dymond Gladney would not be enough as Houston (12-19, 5-11 American) fell to Wichita State (16-14, 7-9 American) at Mohegan Sun Arena. Julia Blackshell-Fair was second on the team in scoring with 17 points, to go along with seven assists. Tatyana Hill paced the Cougars on the boards with eight rebounds.
The Cougars fell behind early due to efficient first half shooting from the Shockers. Wichita State hit 56 percent of its shots from the field, getting ahead by as many as 22 points before a strong second half from the Cougars cut the deficit to four points. Gladney heated things up behind-the-arc, hitting a career-high seven three's as UH outscored Wichita State 20-14 in the third quarter and 24-19 in the fourth quarter.
Houston turned things around defensively in the second half, putting pressure on the Shockers. The Cougar defense accumulated nine steals and forced 18 turnovers. Bria Patterson racked up a career-high five steals on the night. Maya Jones racked up her second straight double-digit outing with 11 points, including a pair a 3-pointers.
Wichita State's Mariah McCully led the Shockers in scoring with 11 points, as Trajata Colbert notched 11 rebounds. The Shockers will advance to the quarterfinal where they will face 2-seed UCF.
