Offense Slugs Houston to Win Over Northwestern State

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team concluded its opening weekend of the 2020 season with a 9-6 victory over Northwestern State University on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.

Houston's win over the Lady Demons caps off a 4-1 start to the season, marking the first time since 2014 the Cougars won four of their first five games of the year.

Entering the bottom of the third inning trailing by a run, the Cougars used a six-run, five-hit frame to claim a five-run lead, which proved to be the difference in the game. Five of the six runs scored that inning came with two outs, with five consecutive batters reaching safely during that stretch.

KEY INNINGS
2^nd | After sophomore outfielder Bethany Busch led the inning off with a single to third, junior outfielder Aspen Howie then connected on her second home run of the season to give the Cougars their first lead of the game.

3^rd | Junior utility Charese Wyatt got the explosive inning going with a solo shot to center. With two outs, senior infielder Kelli Montgomery started the rally with a double down the right field line, and once Busch drew a walk, graduate transfer Becca Schulte doubled home Montgomery to give the Cougars the lead again. Howie followed with a double of her own, scoring Schulte and Busch on the play to extend the lead to three. Sophomore catcher Kati Ray Brown capped off the monster inning with a two-run bomb of her own to centerfield.

ON DECK
The Cougars hit the road for the first time on the season on Wednesday, as they travel to Huntsville, Texas, for a midweek contest at Sam Houston State. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
