HOUSTON – Fresh off its NCAA Regional final berth, the RV/RV University of Houston Softball team opens its 2020 campaign on Friday, when the Cougars host the Houston Invitational from Feb. 7-9 at Cougar Softball Stadium.
The Houston Invitational kicks off a homestretch that will see the Cougars play 13 of their first 14 games on their own turf.
This year's field at the Houston Invitational consists of UMass Lowell, Valparaiso, Fordham and Northwestern.

Houston has discovered that it doesn't need to look far in order to find players that best fit its program, as all but two players on the 2020 roster are from the state of Texas.
In fact, on a smaller scale, nearly 70 percent (14 players) of the entire Coogs' squad is from the Houston metropolitan-area, proving that head coach Kristin Vesely has found all the talent she needs right in her backyard.
A Spotlight Getting Brighter
Entering the 2020 campaign, Houston saw itself appear in two different preseason polls, having earned respect from around the country. The Coogs received seven votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and 15 votes in the USA Softball/ESPN.com Preseason Poll.
In nonconference action, Houston will face three opponents who cracked the top-20. The Cougars will face No. 3/3 Oklahoma on March 13 as part of the OU Tournament. Houston welcomes No. 6/6 Texas (April 1, doubleheader), No. 18/19 Texas Tech (Feb. 22) and RV/24 Oregon (Feb. 14/15).
An All-American Staff... Literally
All four of Houston coaches were All-Americans during their respective playing careers. Head Coach Kristin Vesely (2003-06) and played at Oklahoma under Head Coach Patty Gasso, while Assistant Coach Megan Gibson-Loftin (2005-08) played at Texas A&M under Head Coach Jo Evans.
More recently, Assistant Coach Lexie Elkins (2013-16) and Volunteer Assistant Demi Turner (2015-18) also earned All-American status during their respective playing careers.
