Three Cougars Secure Titles on Opening Day of Championships

Percefull becomes first UH Pole Vaulter to win since 2007
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program closed out the first day of action at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with three conference titles.

Day 1 - Results
The Cougar women conclude the first day of action with 25 points and in third-place behind first-place ECU with 29.5 points and Tulsa in second place with 28 points.
The men currently sit in first-place with 72.5 points, followed by Tulsa in second-place with 25 points and Cincinnati in third-place with 24.5 points.
The Houston Pole Vaulters made history on the first day of the indoor championships as all five UH competitors finished the day among the top-six and Ben Percefull secured the conference title in the event.
Percefull became the first Cougar since 2007 to earn a conference title in the Pole Vault since Alex Bentley in 2007 after clearing 5.21m (17-01.00) on his first attempt. Antonio Ruiz finished out the day in second-place, securing Houston's second spot on the podium in the event clearing 5.21m (17-01.00) on his second attempt. Christyan Sampy and Jacob Adair tied for fourth-place at 5.11m (16.09.25), followed by Tyler Stafford in sixth-place at 5.01m (16.05.25).
Taylor Scaife continues to be one of the best in the NCAA when it comes to the Weight Throw. The senior shattered the meet record and took first-place in the event with a toss of 22.75m (74-07.75). Mikaila Martin had a career day of her own, earning bronze in the event with a personal-best toss of 20.59m (67-06.75). On the men's side, Miles Marhofer secured a silver medal in the Weight Throw with a toss of 20.88m (68-06.00) on his second attempt.
In the men's long jump the Cougars dominated the competition taking all four of the top spots, for their first podium sweep of the weekend. Dayo Akindele added on to his already stellar resume with a first-place finish in the event with a leap of 7.58m (24-10.50) on his second attempt. Allen Blair earned a silver medal with a mark of 7.27m (23-10.25), followed by Kenneth Pree in third-place at 7.22m (23-08.25) on his second attempt. Colin Price rounded out the top-four for UH with a mark of 7.22m (23-08.25).
Samiyah Samuels earned her third straight podium finish in the Long Jump at the indoor championships, finishing second-place with a leap of 6.09m (19-11.75).
The Houston Men's Distance Medley Relay added more points to the Cougar cause as Brandon Seagreaves, Nicholas Hamilton, Alan Elbanna and Ruiz combined for third-place finish at 10:06.66.
Akindele continued to be a force for the Cougars, shattering the meet record in the 60-meter hurdles to head into the finals as the top-seed. Akindele clocked a time of 7.73, matching the fourth-fastest time in program history.
Houston will return to action tomorrow morning at 9:45 a.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
