Houston Sweeps American Indoor Championships

Cougars win both men and women’s titles for second straight year
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program left little doubt that both its men's and women's teams are the teams to beat in The American, sweeping the Indoor Championships for the second straight year.

The Cougar women edged Cincinnati for its second consecutive indoor championship, finishing with 84 points. Cincinnati finished in second-place with 83.5 points, followed by third-place finisher Temple with 71 points. The 0.5 margin of victory is the smallest ever in meet history.
On the men's side, Houston captured its sixth straight indoor conference championship, finishing with 179 points. Connecticut finished with 129 points for second place and Cincinnati finished in third-place with 101 points. The Houston men scored the most points in meet history.
Head Coach Leroy Burrell and his staff took home The American Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
Birexus Hawkins got things going for the Cougars with a third-place finish in the final of the 400-meters. Hawkins clocked a season-best 54.42 in the final. This marks the second straight time that Hawkins has earned a spot on the podium at the indoor championships. Tyrell Valentine earned a third-place finish in the event on the men's side behind a time of 47.47, as Frederick Lewis clocked a time of 47.70 for fifth-place.
After taking first-place in the prelims, Naomi Taylor shattered her own meet record from just a year ago in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.03. After setting the meet record in the 60-meter hurdles yesterday, Dayo Akindele finished third in the final at 7.90 and was trailed by Quivell Jordan with a time of 8.04.
Tristan Evelyn won every race she appeared in on the final day of competition, taking both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash titles. Evelyn ran a time of 7.31 for first-place in the 60-meters and hours later clocked the fourth fastest time in program history in the 200-meter at 23.16.
The Houston sprinters continue to remain a force to be reckoned with, sweeping the podium in the 60-meters behind a first-place finish from Travis Collins who ran a personal-best time of 6.61. Terence Ware finished second at 6.69, followed by Jordan Booker in third-place at 6.77. Nicholas Alexander helped the Cougars takes four of the top-five spots with a fourth-place finish at 6.78, as Christian Hamberlin finished in eighth-place at 6.89.
The Houston men continued to build onto their lead from the first day as Christian Gilmore and Zion Smith finished first and second in the 800-meter run. Gilmore ran a time of 1:52.24, followed by Zion Smith who clocked a new personal-best at 1:52.48.
The men's 200-meter dash concluded with a pair of Cougars on the podium as Booker ran a personal-best 21.03 for second-place, followed by Alexander in third-place at 21.11.
Nora Monie continues to be an anchor for UH in the Shot Put earning the conference crown in the event with a toss of 16.07m (52-08.75) on her first attempt. This is Houston's first indoor women's shot put title since joining The American.
Houston closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the men's 4x400-meter relay, setting a meet record in the process. Antonio Ruiz, Frederick Lewis, Tyrell Valentine and Quivell Jordan clocked a time of 3:09.11 in the event, finishing almost a full three seconds ahead of the field.
