LAREDO, Texas – University of Houston junior Luke Long posted a 4-under 68 in the Second Round of the Border Olympics on Monday afternoon to finish the first day in a tie for sixth at Max Mandel Golf Course.
Long overcame a 74 in the First Round on Tuesday morning with a team-high seven birdies in the afternoon session on the 7,220-yard, par-72 course. The Fayetteville, Ark., native started the Second Round with birdies on two of his first three holes but fell to over par with a double bogey on No. 4 and a bogey on No. 5.
Fortunately, that would be the final miscues on his scorecard for the rest of the day. He closed out his front nine with birdies on two of the final three holes and opened the back nine with birdies on two of his first three holes.
Long drained his final birdie of the day on the 612-yard, par-5 17th hole to join Hugo Hellman (Lamar) and Henrik Lilja (Campbell) in a tie for sixth.
Sam Houston State held the first-day lead at 11-under 565 to finish five strokes ahead of UTSA. ULM (572) and No. 49 Arkansas State (578) rounded out the Top-4 leaders with Campbell (583), Little Rock (584), Lamar (585), Rice (586) and Toledo (587) competing the Top 10.
Sam Houston State's Noah Steele grabbed the individual lead after 36 holes with a 9-under 135 to finish three strokes ahead of teammate William Holcomb. UTSA's Christian Fanfelle stood in third at 139, while Lamar's Pedro Marin was in fourth at 140.
Senior Matt Cole was tied for 13th at even-par 144, thanks to a 71 in the Second Round, which featured five birdies.
Competing as an individual, senior Logan Young fired a 68 of his own to finish the first day in a tie for 19th at 145. The Normangee, Texas, native began off No. 18 and drained three birdies in a 5-hole stretch midway through his first nine holes.
Young overcame his lone bogey of the day on No. 13 with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15.
Sophomore Braxton Watkins was tied for 34th at 147, while junior Andrew Gibson was tied for 48th at 149. Junior Alexander Frances was tied for 65th at 152. Junior Laurence Crea played as an individual and was tied for 65th at 152.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from Campbell, Little Rock and Lamar beginning with an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
Long begins his day off No. 5 with Watkins (first group off No. 6), Cole (second group off No. 6), Gibson (No. 7) and Frances (No. 8 following).
Young begins in the first group off No. 6, while Crea will be in the second group off No. 18.
