Cougars hit four home runs in win
The four home runs the Cougars (7-4) launched vs. the Bearkats (4-7) are the most hit in a single game since Houston connected on five home runs against Incarnate Word on Feb. 19, 2017. With tonight's win, the Cougars have now outscored the Bearkats 33-4 in the past three matchups, all resulting in victories for Houston.
After senior infielder Kelli Montgomery started the home run barrage, junior designated player Charese Wyatt, sophomore catcher Kati Ray Brown and senior infielder Sarah Queen all joined in on the party. The home run for Brown marked her fifth of the season, which leads the American Athletic Conference.
Montgomery finished the night with a career-high four RBIs, while Queen's three RBIs tied her career best.
In the circle, freshman pitcher Megan Lee tossed her fourth complete-game of the season, striking out a career-high seven batters in the process.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | The Cougars wasted no time responding to the Bearkats two-run lead and took full advantage of sophomore outfielder Bethany Busch being on base, as Montgomery sent her second long ball of the season over the fence to tie the score at two.
3rd | After sophomore outfielder Abby Odneal reached base on a walk, Wyatt then stepped up to the plate and connected on her second home run of the season to put Houston ahead by a pair. Once junior outfielder and Busch made their way on the bases, Montgomery sent an 0-2 pitch into the gap to score both runners and stretch the Cougars' lead to four.
6th | Brown continued her tear to start the season, giving Houston the 7-3 lead with her fifth home run of the year. Three consecutive players then reached base for Houston and after junior infielder Rock Benavides scored off a wild pitch, Queen was at the plate with two runners on and annihilated one out of the park to seal the 11-3 walk-off victory for the Cougars.
