NEW ORLEANS – For the second straight round, University of Houston junior Ariana Saenz posted a sub-par score to tie for third at 5-under 214 following the Final Round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Tuesday afternoon.
Competing on the 6,336-yard, par-73 course at English Turn Country Club, Saenz began her day off No. 4 with three consecutive birdies. After a bogey on the par-3 eighth hole, she regained the stroke with a birdie on the 371-yard, par-4 ninth hole.
The Porter, Texas, native went on to drain another birdie on No. 15 for a 2-under 71 on the way to the best finish of her career. It topped her fourth-place showing at the Bruzzy Challenge during the 2017-18 season as a freshman at Texas A&M.
The 23rd-ranked Cougars posted a score of 295 in the Final Round and finished fifth at 879. No. 10 Florida captured the team championship with a score of 853 with No. 32 Miami (Fla.) (869), No. 13 Michigan State (875) and No. 47 Denver (877) rounding out the Top-4 leaders.
NC State (881), Tulane (882), SMU (883), North Texas (885) and Tulsa (892) completed the Top 10.
Clara Manzalini (212) and Anna Backman (Miami (Fla.)) shared medalist honors at 7-under 212. Addison Baggarly (Florida), Mary Weinstein (Denver), Serena Shah (SMU) and Mim Sangkapong (NC State) tied for third at 214.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes over three days, but rain forced teams to play 36 holes Monday with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
Sophomore Annie Kim tied with Saenz for the team's low round of the day. Although she started the Final Round off No. 17 with bogeys on two of her first three holes, Kim rallied with birdies on No. 3 and on No. 8 to return to even par.
Kim suffered her final bogey of the day on No. 9 but drained birdies on three of her final six holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 15-16, to tie for 22nd at 220.
Sophomore Maria Jose Martinez joined Kim in the tie for 22nd, while freshman Karen Fredgaard tied for 34th at 227. Seniors Amanda Elich and Brooke McDougald tied for 47th at 227.
