Cougars receive 1,313 points in Associated Press poll, collect 636 points in USA TODAY Coaches’ Top 25
HOUSTON – Winners of its last eight games, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program continued to rise in both national polls this week.
The Cougars (7-0) earned 1,313 points – an increase of 41 – from last week to move to No. 5 in the Associated Press poll. Houston received 636 points – up from 559 points a week ago – to move to No. 5 in the USA TODAY Coaches' poll.
Houston opened American Athletic Conference play last week with a pair of wins over Temple (76-50, Dec. 22) and at UCF (63-54, Sunday). Against UCF, the Cougars overcame an early double-digit deficit and outscored the Knights 38-29 in the second half to take the victory.

This is the highest Houston has been ranked in the AP poll since finishing the 1983-84 season at No. 5 on March 12, 1984.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, Houston Basketball has ranked among the nation's Top 10 for at least one week in two of the last three seasons. During the 2018-19 season, the Cougars appeared in the AP Top 10 for three straight weeks, eventually finishing at No. 11, after advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time since 1984.
Prior to the 2020-21 season, the Cougars stood in both national preseason polls for the first time since November 1983.
