Marcus Jones and Grant Stuard named first-team selections
HOUSTON – Houston Football tallied five all-conference honors as the American Athletic Conference announced its annual football awards on Tuesday.
Junior return specialist Marcus Jones and senior linebacker Grant Stuard were named to the American Athletic Conference First Team, while senior defensive lineman Payton Turner was selected to the Second Team.
Senior offensive lineman Braylon Jones and senior defensive back Damarion Williams were picked as honorable mention all-conference selections.
In 2020, Jones set the American Athletic Conference single-season punt return yards (317) and ranks second nationally in punt return average (21.1). The Enterprise, Ala., native is the only player in the FBS to record 100 punt return yards in at least two games this season. The junior's 317 punt return yards this season ranks fourth all-time in Houston single-season history.
Stuard ranks first in the American in tackles per game (8.3) and leads Houston with 61 total tackles this season. He has also recorded five tackles for loss in 2020 and scored on a 34-yard fumble recovery touchdown against UCF. The Conroe, Texas, native has started 19 straight games at linebacker for the Cougars and recorded 158 tackles over the last two seasons.
Despite playing in five games in 2020, Turner has made a significant impact on Houston's defensive line. The senior has recorded 25 tackles, a team-high 5.0 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. Turner opened the season with six tackles and two sacks against Tulane. He recorded a career-high eight stops in Houston's win over Navy.
Jones has logged 44 career starts at four different positions on UH's offensive line since 2016 and served as a team captain in 2020. The Tyler, Texas, native has helped Houston rank in the top-5 in the American this season in passing yards per game, scoring offense and total offense.
Williams earned his first all-conference recognition and has logged 26 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a team-high seven pass breakups this season. The senior has started 19 consecutive games for Houston at cornerback.
Houston has had at least four players earn all-conference honors in each season since 2004.
