Cougars to play five home games in Fertitta Center with road contests vs. Texas Tech and Alabama
HOUSTON – As the 2020-21 season continues to approach, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program released its non-conference schedule on Thursday.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars will compete in seven non-conference games in 2020-21 with five being played inside the Fertitta Center. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA recently reduced the total number of games that could be scheduled.
The Cougars open the season when they face Lamar inside the Fertitta Center on Nov. 25. Houston has won its last 11 and 15 of its last 16 season openers and hope to extend that streak in the Cardinals' second trip to the Fertitta Center in the last three years.
From there, the Cougars will take part in the Southwest Showcase with Boise State, Texas Tech and Sam Houston State. On Nov. 27, Houston will host Boise State inside the Fertitta Center in the Broncos' first trip to UH. Texas Tech will face the Bearkats in Lubbock.
On Nov. 29, those four teams meet inside Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The Cougars will take on Texas Tech for the first time since the 2014-15 season, while Sam Houston State meets Boise State.
That won't be the first time the Cougars compete inside Dickies Arena. The team will open the postseason during the American Athletic Conference Championship on March 11-14.
The Cougars return to the Fertitta Center for three straight home games to open the month of December. Houston plays host to South Carolina on Dec. 5 after taking a 76-56 win in Columbia, S.C., on Dec. 8, 2019.
From there, Houston meets Sam Houston State on Dec. 9 before facing Rice on Dec. 12. A year ago, guard Quentin Grimes poured in a career-high 32 points to lead the Cougars to a come-from-behind 97-89 win inside Tudor Fieldhouse on Nov. 19, 2019.
The Cougars close their non-conference slate when they take on Alabama inside Coleman Coliseum on Dec. 19. It will be the first meeting against the Crimson Tide on the hardwood since the 1979-80 season.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
Houston's American Athletic Conference schedule as well as game times and TV networks for all games will be announced soon.
The American Athletic Conference recently revealed that teams will play a 20-game league schedule for the first time in 2020-21. The Cougars will meet its other 10 conference rivals in home-and-home series.
Houston previously played 18-game American schedules in each of its first seven years in the league.
