Mills Named to West Award Preseason Watch List

Sophomore guard collects latest preseason honor
HOUSTON – University of Houston sophomore guard Caleb Mills was named to the Jerry West Award Preseason Watch List on Tuesday afternoon.
Now in its seventh season, the West Award recognizes the top shooting guards in NCAA Division I basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the Preseason Watch List of 20 candidates.
Mills was one of 20 student-athletes from schools across the nation who made the Preseason list. He was joined by John Petty Jr. (Alabama); Terry Taylor (Austin Peay); MaCio Teague (Baylor); Matt Bradley (California); James Bouknight (UConn); Mitch Ballock (Creighton); Kellan Grady (Davidson); Antoine Davis (Detroit Mercy); DJ Steward (Duke); Scottie Lewis (Florida); MJ Walker (Florida State); Joel Ayayi (Gonzaga); Joe Wieskamp (Iowa); Ochai Agbaji (Kansas); Terrence Clarke (Kentucky); Franz Wagner (Michigan); Jordan Goodwin (Saint Louis); Justin Moore (Villanova) and Paul Scruggs (Xavier).
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In late February, five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Jerry West Award will be presented on April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
Previous winners of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award include Myles Powell, Seton Hall (2020); RJ Barrett, Duke (2019); Carsen Edwards, Purdue (2018); Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017); Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015).

These are only the latest preseason honors for Mills. In late October, he was picked as the American Athletic Conference's Preseason Player of the Year and was a unanimous First-Team selection in voting by the league's head coaches.
He began his first season of competition with the Cougars as a redshirt freshman in 2019-20 and made an immediate impact. The Arden, N.C., native enjoyed eight 20-point games, including a career-high 27 points at Memphis in late February..
Mills led the Cougars with 13.2 points per game, joining Houston great Rob Williams as the only freshmen in school history to lead their teams in scoring. Williams averaged 16.3 points per contest as a freshman in 1979-80.
He finished second among the Cougars with 50 3-pointers in his first collegiate season on the way to being named to the 2020 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team. Mills also earned a place on the league's All-Freshman Team, joining current teammate guard Marcus Sasser.
THE SCHEDULE
While the team's complete schedule has not been announced yet, the American Athletic Conference recently revealed that teams will play a 20-game league schedule for the first time in 2020-21. The Cougars will meet its other 10 conference rivals in home-and-home series.
Houston previously played 18-game American schedules in each of its first seven years in the league.
The full schedule, along with television selections and game times, will be announced at a later date.
