HOUSTON – Representatives from the Houston Soccer, Track and Field, and Volleyball programs joined Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Tuesday as the Mayor revealed his "Mayor's Challenge" for city's local universities.
With early voting taking place from Oct.13-30, the initiative focuses on encouraging students from the University of Houston, Texas Southern and Rice to vote in the upcoming election.
Houston was represented by junior forward Zionah Browne from the Soccer team, junior sprinter Frederick Lewis from the Track and field team, as well as junior outside hitter Alexis Cheatum from the Volleyball team.
During the event, Cheatum spoke about Houston's student-athletes organizing for social justice and using their platforms to create change they wish to see.
"I feel so blessed to be someone that spoke at this voting challenge, and I thank everyone who gave me this opportunity," Cheatum said. "I am excited about this new, innovative way to engage young voters and reiterate that their vote matters. Mayor Turner and Congresswoman Lee both repeated that your vote counts, and to be aware that you are voting for more than just the executive branch. This is a great way for students' voices to be hear in the upcoming election. Let's continue to promote change by changing the system through our vote."
Those wishing to vote on the UH campus can do so at the UH Student Center South during the early voting period from Oct. 13-30.
