Houston Women Tabbed 15th in Preseason TFRI

Cougars return strong core from 2018-19 season
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program enters its 22nd season under Head Coach Leroy Burrell, and begins the season earning high praise from the U.S. Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
 On the men's side, the Cougars appear at No. 68 in the initial TFRI team rankings. Nathaniel Mechler debuts at No. 9 in the Heptathlon rankings after taking second in the event at The American Championships. Jermaine Holt and Travis Collins return to Houston with postseason experience, along with newcomers Dayo Akindele, Miles Marhofer and Antonio Ruiz. Marhofer made his Houston debut by shattering the program weight throw record and cementing himself a spot in the Houston record books.

Houston will hit the track for the first time in 2020 when the Cougars hosts the Leonard Hilton Invitational Memorial Invitational on Jan. 17.

FULL WOMEN'S RANKINGS BY EVENT
The women's team enters the season ranked 15th in the Women's Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index. The squad starts the season returning a strong core of student-athletes who posted some of their best scores from both the current season and previous seasons. Among those returning are junior Naomi Taylor, who won the 60-meter hurdles title at the 2019 American Championships and took fourth-place in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.  Taylor enters the season ranked sixth nationally in the 60-meter hurdles. Taylor Scaife comes back after winning The American weight throw title last season and posting an emphatic third-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Scaife enters the season ranked second nationally in the weight throw. On the men's side, the Cougars appear at No. 68 in the initial TFRI team rankings.
