Holgorsen Announces Coaching Staff Responsibilities

HOUSTON – After announcing last week that Mark Scott will serve as special teams coordinator, University of Houston head football coach Dana Holgorsen finalized responsibilities for the rest of the coaching staff for the 2020 season on Thursday.
Shannon Dawson, who served as Houston's tight ends coach a year ago, will move into the offensive coordinator role and work with the Cougars' quarterbacks. Dawson has previously served as offensive coordinator at various stops including Southern Miss (2016-18), Kentucky (2015), West Virginia (2012-14), Stephen F. Austin (2008-10) and Millsaps College (2006-07).
Marquel Blackwell will transition to running backs coach after working with Houston's quarterbacks in 2019. Justin Johnson will be responsible for UH's tight ends and Y-receivers after serving as a running backs coach last season.
Entering his second season at Houston, co-defensive coordinator Doug Belk has also been promoted to associate head coach. Belk will continue to coach the Cougars' safeties and work in his role as co-defensive coordinator.
The Cougars have also added Casey Smithson to their staff as the Director of Player Personnel. Smithson most recently served as the defensive recruiting coordinator at West Virginia from 2014-19.
