Rehr earns first victory as Houston head coach
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Behind a career-high 25 kills from freshman Abbie Jackson, the University of Houston Volleyball team took down McNeese on Tuesday night by a score of 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-18). The win for the Cougars (1-4) also marks the first Houston victory for Head Coach David Rehr.
Â
Along with Jackson's breakout performance, junior setter Abby Irvine dished 49 assists on the night, tying her career-high she set last weekend at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. Houston's defense was also put on display, as four different Cougars surpassed the 10-dig mark, which was led by junior libero Katie Karbo.
Houston 3, McNeese 1
Set 1
Houston came out firing with energy right from the start, as an early four-point lead forced the Cowgirls to call a timeout. With Irvine guiding the Houston offense at the 18-17 mark, an ace from Karbo allowed to the Cougars to pull away late in the set, where Houston never looked back from that point. A kill from sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut cemented the 25-19 set victory for Houston to give the Cougars a 1-0 match lead.
Â
Set 2
Another slam from Theut put the Cougars ahead 11-6, but a steady run from McNeese trimmed the Houston advantage to three late in the set, forcing the Cougars to call their first timeout of the match. Houston didn't crumble though, as a service ace from senior Megan Duncan sealed the 25-21 set win and gave Houston the 2-0 match lead at intermission.
Â
Set 3
After neither team was able to gain an edge on one another to start the frame, the Cowgirls began to pull away midway through the set, holding a seven-point advantage, but the Cougars showed their fight, having brought the score to within two at 17-15. McNeese responded though as an 8-4 run from the Cowgirls gave them the 25-19 set win to force a fourth frame.
Â
Set 4
Jackson continued to take charge of the Cougar offense early in the set with her 17th kill at that point to put Houston ahead by a pair. With Houston building on its momentum, Jackson stretched the Houston lead to 16-10 with another kill, which was all the Cougars need to roll to their 25-18 set win and come away with the 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
The Cougars continue their road trip and head to San Antonio for the UTSA Classic taking place Sept. 6-7. Houston will open the event facing UTSA on Friday at noon.
