Irvine, Jackson both have career performances in victory
SAN ANTONIO – Career performances from junior setter Abby Irvine and freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson paced the University of Houston Volleyball team to a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) victory over UTSA on Friday afternoon in the UTSA Classic opener.
Â
Irvine dished out 50 assists, marking the most helpers in a four-set match since Keandra McCardell posted 51 against Memphis in 2014. Irvine also recorded 11 digs, marking her second double-double of the season and 27th of her career.
Â
After setting a career-high 25 kills against McNeese on Tuesday, Jackson topped that mark on Friday afternoon with a career-high 30 kills. That number is tied for the fourth-most in a four-set match in program history. Jackson has surpassed the 20-kill mark plateau in three of her past four matches.
Â
As a team, the Cougars (2-4) out-hit the Roadrunners (1-3) by 14 kills, 61-47. Houston also recorded more digs than UTSA, as senior libero Katie Karbo's 18 digs led all players. She was one of three Cougars to eclipse the double-figure digs, with Irvine and senior outside hitter Claire Karsten also exceeding that mark.
Houston 3, UTSA 1
Set 1
The Cougars got off to a fast start, building themselves a three-point lead, thanks to a pair of early kills from sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut. After a 3-0 run from the Roadrunners gave them a 15-13 advantage, the Cougars found themselves in a deficit and were able to keep pace, until five unanswered points from UTSA pushed the Roadrunners to a 25-19 set victory.
Â
Set 2
The second stanza started off in a battle, as the score remained tied at seven, as neither team was able to gain an edge on one another. Once Jackson slammed home her 13th kill of the match to put the Cougars ahead 18-16, Houston closed out the set on a 7-3 run to win the frame, 25-19 and tie the match score at one, heading into the intermission.
Â
Set 3
Houston managed to build itself a five-point cushion midway through the set, but UTSA responded with three-straight points to trim the score down to 16-14 and force the Cougars to call a timeout. The Cougars came back with a run of their own and pushed the lead back to five, where they never looked back from that point, as Jackson pounded her 20th kill of the match to seal the 25-21 set win.
Â
Set 4
Senior outside hitter Megan Duncan began the fourth frame joining Jackson as those with 10-plus kills on the afternoon, as her slam put Houston ahead 7-5. Another kill from Jackson off an Irvine set opened up a seven-point lead for the Cougars, but UTSA strung together a rebuttal and managed to bring the Houston advantage to just a pair, 15-13. After a timeout from the Cougars, Houston went on a 6-2 run, capped off by Jackson and cruised to the 25-21 set victory and cementing the 3-1 match victory.
UP NEXT
The Cougars wrap up their time in San Antonio with a pair of matches on Saturday. Houston begins the day going up against Maryland at noon and concludes the weekend with a matchup with UTRGV at 5 p.m.
