FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Trailing the leaders by seven strokes after 36 holes, the University of Houston Women's Golf program fired the Final Round's low team score to capture the Mason Rudolph Championship title at Vanderbilt Legends Club on Sunday afternoon.
Houston, which entered the Final Round in sixth, posted a score of 4-under 284 to win by two shots over Clemson and host Vanderbilt in the team's season-opening event on the 6,406-yard, par-72 North Course.
Auburn finished fourth at 871, while Charlotte (875), Mississippi State (876), North Carolina (878), UCF (879), Louisville (887) and Chattanooga (893) rounded out the Top-10 team leaders.
Overcoming a tough start, sophomore Maria Jose Martinez led the Cougars with a score of 4-under 212 and tied for second. She was one of three Cougars to finish among the Top-8 leaders, joining fellow sophomore Hannah Screen (214, t-5th) and freshman Karen Fredgaard (215, t-8th).
Starting off No. 1, Martinez stood at 3-over through three holes after a bogey on No. 2 and a double bogey on No. 3. However, she quickly rallied with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5 and another set of consecutive birdies on Nos. 8-9 to close her front nine.
Although she started her back nine with a bogey on No. 10, Martinez rallied with birdies on two of her next three holes at No. 11 and No. 13. Following four straight pars, the Alvarado, Mexico, native closed the tournament with her final birdie on No. 18, her team-leading seventh of the day.
Martinez recorded her career-best finish, topping her previous high of fifth at the MountainView Collegiate on March 24, 2019, in Arizona.
UCF's Tunrada Piddon earned medalist honors with a score of 210. Martinez joined Vanderbilt's Abbey Carlson in a tie for second at 212, while Vanderbilt's Morgan Baxendale finished fourth at 213.
Screen used a strong finish to shoot 71 for her second sub-par round of the tournament and tied for fifth at 214. Standing at 1-over through 16 holes, the Berkhamsted, U.K., native birdied each of her last two holes to earn the sixth Top-10 finish of her young career.
Fredgaard tied for eighth with a score of 1-under 215 in the inaugural appearance of her Houston career, thanks to three birdies on her front nine. The Asserbo, Denmark, native previously set a school record for a Houston player making her debut with a 71 in Friday's First Round.
Fredgaard also set a school record for highest finish at a 54-hole tournament in her debut (Kailey Collier, t-11th, HBU Husky Invitational, March 28-29, 2016) and fell just one stroke sky of tying Martinez' 54-hole low record for a debut (Jim West Challenge, Oct. 28-29, 2018).
Senior Brooke McDougald posted a 71 in the Final Round in her Houston debut. The Woodlands, Texas, native opened the day with a birdie on the par-4 first hole.
After consecutive bogeys to close her front nine, McDougald played bogey-free golf on her final nine holes with birdies on No. 14 and No. 18. She and sophomore Annie Kim tied for 65th at 231.
Competing as an individual, junior Ariana Saenz tied for 56th at 228.
