FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Sophomores and All-American Athletic Conference honorees Hannah Screen and Maria Jose Martinez each fired 70s to tie for fourth and lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program during the First Round of the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday.
Competing on the 6,460-yard, par-72 North Course at Vanderbilt Legends Club, the Cougars posted a score of 1-under 287 to tie with host Vanderbilt for the first-day lead.
UCF and North Carolina were tied for third at 288, while Charlotte (290), Clemson (291), Mississippi State (291), Chattanooga (292), Mercer (293) and Auburn (294) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Starting off No. 10, Screen began the tournament with three birdies in her first six holes, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 14-15. Enduring a pair of birdies on her next six holes, Screen rebounded with birdies on No. 4 and on No. 8 to finish the first day with a 70.
Martinez began the 2019 fall season with a birdie on the 382-yard, par-4 1th hole and closed out her first nine with a birdie on No. 18 to return to even par. After another bogey on No. 1, the Alvarado, Mexico, native returned to even par on No. 2 and drained the team's lone eagle of the round on the 477-yard, par-4 fifth hole for her 70.
With a 1-under 71, freshman Karen Fredgaard set a school record for a student-athlete in their Houston debut. The Asserbo, Denmark, native started her day with eight straight pars before bogeying No. 18.
Fortunately, she quickly rebounded with birdies on Nos. 1 and No. 3 and added her final birdie of the day on the par-4 eighth hole.
With her total, Fredgaard topped the previous low round of a player in their Houston debut, held by Screen (72, Mason Rudolph Championship, Sept. 21, 2018, Vanderbilt Legends Club, Franklin, Tenn.); Ivon Reijers (Mason Rudolph Championship, Sept. 16, 2016 Vanderbilt Legends Club, Franklin, Tenn.) and Maddy Rayner (The "Mo"Morial, Sept. 8, 2014, Traditions Club, Bryan, Texas).
Fredgaard wasn't the only Cougar making their debuts on Friday. Sophomore Annie Kim and senior Brooke McDougald each tied for 51st at 76, while junior Ariana Saenz – competing as an individual – was tied for 67th at 79.
