Cougars to face Syracuse in First Round
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Basketball team will head north to Victoria, Canada, for the 2019 Greater Victoria Invitational, presented by the City of Langford, taking place across Nov. 28-30 at the University of Victoria.
The Cougars will spend their Thanksgiving north of the border as the team is slated to participate in an eight-team tournament hosted by bdG Sports, University of Victoria and the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission. The three-day tournament will feature four-games daily with a winners' and losers' bracket. The field is highlighted by NCAA tournament teams in Mississippi State, Stanford and Syracuse, Horizon league second-place finisher Green Bay, WAC second-place finisher Cal Baptist, as well as Bowling Green and San Francisco.
Houston will face Syracuse in the opening round on Nov. 28. The Orange are coming off a postseason run that ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse returns seven of its leading scorers from last season and was ranked 16th in the final Coaches' Poll of the 2019-20 season.
The Cougars are in the same side of the bracket as Stanford and Cal Baptist, while Green Bay, Bowling Green, Mississippi State and San Francisco are on the other side.
"I think this is a dynamic field that touches all conferences and styles of play," says Head Coach Ronald Hughey. "Mississippi State is up in your face, Stanford is long and athletic, you'll see a match-up zone with Syracuse and Green Bay is a Horizon league power. They've done a great job of touching on different styles of play. We are excited. Every game will be a great game and we are looking forward to playing.
"(Syracuse Head Coach Quentin Hillsman) has been a mentor to me. He is an amazing basketball coach and a resource for me. I can't say enough about (Syracuse). The last time I played them was during my time at Florida State."
