Cougars set to square off with Big 12, SEC and Pac-12 opponents
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Basketball program and Head Coach Ronald Hughey released its full 2019-20 non-conference schedule on Monday.
"We are excited about our non-conference schedule from top to bottom," says Hughey. "We are competing to have one of the best schedules in the country and as you can see, we will be playing opponents from the Big 12, SEC and Pac-12. It shows where we are trying to take this program and shows recruits that we play a national schedule. It will be a challenge and we are up for it."
The Cougars will host six contests in their second season playing inside the $60-million Fertitta Center and play in three road contests, along with holiday tournaments in Vancouver and New York. Houston will face a stacked schedule with teams such as Stanford, Texas & A&M, Syracuse, Minnesota and Mississippi State, all of whom played in the either the WNIT or NCAA Tournament this past season. The schedule also features four squads that finished the season in the top-25 of the NCAA Women's basketball RPI.
The Cougars 2019-20 season will open on Nov. 5 in Atlanta when the squad squares off with Georgia Tech for the second straight season and second time in program history. Last season, Houston defeated the Yellow Jackets in a double-overtime thriller inside H&PE Arena.
Houston will host Southeastern Louisiana in its home opener on Nov. 9 at the Fertitta Center, before heading East to New Mexico for a Nov. 12 meeting with the Lobos. This will mark the seventh time in program history that the Cougars have matched up with SLU and the second time in as many seasons that the team will square off with New Mexico.
On Nov. 17, Houston will return to H-Town for a two-game homestand beginning with crosstown rival Houston Baptist. Houston will then welcome Big 12 foe Oklahoma to the Fertitta Center on Nov. 23 for its first meeting with the Sooners since the 1980-81 season.
The Cougars will head north of the border for the Thanksgiving holiday when the squad travels to Vancouver for the TCL Vancouver Showcase from Nov. 28-30. The field includes opponents from the Pac-12, SEC, Big East, Horizon League, WAC and West Coast Conference. Last season's field included NCAA runner-up Notre Dame and six other teams who made it to the postseason. Games will be played in British Columbia at the Vancouver Convention Center and the entire tournament field will be announced at a later date.
Houston will open the month of December at home with a pair of contests inside the Fertitta Center starting off with a meeting with Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 4, before setting its sights on Louisiana Tech for a Dec. 8 matchup. This will be Houston's second straight meeting with each program.
On Dec. 15 Houston will head to College Station to square off with in-state foe Texas A&M for the second straight season before heading back to Houston to play Southern Miss on Dec. 19.
The Cougars will conclude their non-conference slate with a trip to the, "Big Apple", for a holiday tournament at Fordham on Dec. 29-30. The field will feature Fordham who earned a bid to the NCAA postseason last season, as well as Hofstra and Samford.
