Houston Picked a Close Second in West Division

Cougars collect 162 points, stand only three points behind Memphis, in Preseason Poll
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Houston Football team received 162 points in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Football Media Poll to rank a close second in the West Division.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Dana Holgorsen, the Cougars received 14 first-place votes by media voters and trailed preseason West Division favorite Memphis by only three points.
The Cougars also received four points from voters to win The American championship, joining UCF, Cincinnati and Memphis as the only teams to receive points in that category.
Tulane (108), SMU (87), Navy (70) and Tulsa (38) rounded out the rest of the West Division in the poll.
UCF was picked to win the East Division after collecting 19 first-place votes and 169 points. The Knights were also the league's preseason favorite with 12 points.
Cincinnati (157), USF (107), Temple (101), ECU (66) and UConn (30) completed the poll for the East Division.
The Preseason Poll was unveiled Tuesday morning prior to Commissioner Mike Aresco's opening address at The American Summer Kickoff & Football Media Days in Newport, R.I.
Holgorsen was joined by senior quarterback D'Eriq King, senior offensive lineman Josh Jones, senior defensive lineman Aymiel Fleming and senior punter Dane Roy.

ESPN will show live coverage of the Summer Kickoff and Media Days from Noon to 2 p.m. (CDT), Tuesday. Matt Schick and Rene Ingoglia will anchor the coverage, which will feature interviews with all 12 head coaches as well as Aresco.
