Houston Picks Up 21 All-America Honors

Cougars earns 11 First Team All-American selections
HOUSTON – The University of Houston track & field team earned a combined 21 All-America honors, including 11 First Team selections as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

With the men's team fresh off of its second straight third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and the women's team shattering the program record in the 4x100-meter relay, the Cougars earned 21 All-America honors. On the women's side; Essance Sample, Samiyah Samuels, Ashley Seymour and Naomi Taylor earned Second-Team All-America status for their performance in the 4x100-meter relay. The quartet posted the fastest non-qualifying time in the event at the NCAA Championships for a ninth-place finish in the semifinals.
Samuels and Taylor earned Second Team All-America honors in their individual events after finishing their events in 11th and 15th-place, respectively. Samuels closed out the long jump in 11th-place with a leap of 20-4.5 (6.21) and Taylor clocked a time of 13.14 in the 100-meter hurdles for a 15th-place finish.
In her second event of the weekend, Seymour earned a 18th-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a lifetime best 11.42 to earn Honorable Mention All-America status.
On the men's side the Cougars earn the third-most First Team All-American selections in the field with 11. Amere Lattin leads the Cougars with three First Team All-America selections and is one of six student-athletes with three First Team honors. Lattin finished third in the 400-meter hurdles, besting his previous lifetime best and program record with the sixth-fastest time in the world at 48.72. The senior closed out the 110-meter hurdles in seventh-place at 13.77.
Mario Burke, Obi Igbokwe and Kahmari Montgomery earned two All-America honors each. Burke turned in a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter (10.06) dash and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (20.11). Igbokwe closed out the 400-meter dash in eighth-place and helped the Cougars to a third-place finish in the 400-meter relay. Montgomery earned the Cougars first NCAA title in the 400-meter dash with the eighth-fastest collegiate time ever at 44.23, along with helping the Cougars on the 4x400-meter relay.
Trumaine Jefferson and Jermaine Holt earned First Team accolades, as Quivell Jordan earned Second Team All-America accolades, followed by Travis Collins who earned Honorable Mention All-America honors. Jefferson scored the first points of the meet for the Cougars with a second-place finish in the long jump. Holt helped the Cougars run the fastest 4x400-meter relay in program history, running the third leg of the race. Jordan narrowly missed the final of the 400-meter hurdles with a ninth-place finish at 50.37. Collins closed out his first trip to the NCAA Championships with a 19th-place finish, clocking a time of 10.24.
END OF SEASON HAPPY HOUR
The Houston Cougar Track & Field program will host an end of season Happy Hour, June 11 from 6-8 p.m. at BB's Café on Westheimer to celebrate the outstanding success of both the Men and Women's programs during the 2018-19 Indoor and Outdoor seasons.
