Cougars look to qualify for NCAA Championships
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougars Track & Field program will begin action at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, California at Hornet Stadium on Thursday with entries in 18 events.

ABOUT THE NCAA WEST REGION
Â
The NCAA West Regional is a three-day event held on the campus of CSU-Sacramento. The top individuals from the West Region will be in attendance vying for the top-12 spots in each individual event. The regional includes the top-24 relay squads from the West. The top-six relays and the top-12 individual competitors will advance to the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Â
The men's team highlights 11 events for the Cougars with seven entries in the men's 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Mario Burke paces the Cougars with the second-fastest time in the region at 9.95, as Houston holds six of the top-15 times in the region in the event.

The 200-meter dash will feature Kahmari Montgomery who holds the third-fastest time in the region at 20.32. The Cougars hold three of the top-15 times in the region in the event.

The men's 400-meter dash will feature Obi Igbokwe, Jermaine Holt and Kahmari Montgomery. Igbokwe leads the field for the Cougars as he enters the race with the 10th-fastest time in the region, followed by Montgomery with the 13th-best time in the West. Holt enters the field ranked 33rd.

Houston will be represented in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles by top-seeded Amere Lattin who enters the race with the fastest time in the region in each of the events. He will be joined by Devion Wilson in the 110-meter hurdles and Quivell Jordan in the 400-meter hurdles.

The high jump will feature American Athletic Conference Outdoor silver medalist Brendon Rivera, who comes in with the 23rd-best mark among the West region competitors at 6-11.5 (2,12).

Trumaine Jefferson will be making his third appearance at regionals, competing in the long jump and 4x400-meter relay for Houston. Jefferson holds the 19th-best mark in the long jump in the region at 25-1.75 (7.66).

Houston will be represented by Felipe Valencia and Triston Gibbons in the throws, as American Athletic Conference Shot Put champion Valencia looks to advance to the NCAA Championships in his signature event with the 27th-best mark in the region at 60-9.25 (18.52). Conference silver medalist Gibbons will look to advance to his first NCAA Championships in the shot put as well as the discus throw.

The men's teams will compete in both the 4x100-meter and the 4x400-meter relay with the top-time in the region in the 4x100 and the second-fastest time in the region in the 4x400.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE

Freshman Ashley Seymour will make her debut at the NCAA West Regional, competing in the 100-meter, 200-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay.

Entering the race with the ninth-fastest time in the region and a conference title, Naomi Taylor will compete in the 100-meter hurdles.
Â
Samiyah Samuels will make her second straight appearance at regionals with the 20th-best mark in the region at 20-7.25 (6.28).

Priscilla Adejokun and Mikaila Martin will represent Houston in the throws. Adejokun is fresh off of a third-place finish at the conference championships in the shot put and enters the event with the mark of 50-10 (15.49). The sophomore will also compete in the hammer throw alongside Martin who earned a sixth-place finish at the conference championships. The duo holds the 36th and 38th best marks in the region.
