Houston Homers Twice in Loss to UConn at The American Championship

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell 4-3 to UConn in the opening game of the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday morning at Spectrum Field.

With the decision, the Cougars move to 32-23 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 34-22 overall.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | UConn struck first with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second.

4th | Junior third baseman Jared Triolo homered to left field to open the fourth inning.

6th | Senior first baseman Joe Davis tied the game with a leadoff home run to left field in the top of the sixth.

7th | Houston took its first lead of the game behind a two-out, RBI single from junior shortstop Kobe Hyland in the top of the seventh. However, the Huskies tied the game with a solo home run to open the bottom frame.

9th | UConn hit a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for the 4-3 final.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo led Houston going 2-for-4 with a home run and one stolen base.
• Davis' homer highlighted a 1-for-3 showing with a walk.
• Hyland recorded an RBI single in a 1-for-4 effort with a stolen base.
• Sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace (1-for-3) and junior righter/left fielder Tyler Bielamowicz (1-for-4) singled, respectively. Bielamowicz added a stolen base.

Pitching:
• Junior Fred Villarreal (5-4) suffered the loss, allowing one run in the bottom of the ninth.
• Junior Lael Lockhart Jr. went six innings in the no-decision. He surrendered three runs while walking none and striking out two.
• Junior Sean Bretz, who relieved Lockhart Jr. after a leadoff home run, stranded two runners in the top of the seventh.

ON DECK
The Cougars will face No. 7 ECU in an elimination game at 2 p.m. CT, Wednesday.
